To make changes to your theme on the coding level, you are going to want to create a one-click child theme. This is very easy to do. You have to first download the free plugin we have created for one click child themes here: https://github.com/sdsweb/sds-one-click-child-themes There is a "Download ZIP" option on the right of the screen.
Once you have installed the WordPress plugin on your site, you want to navigate to our theme options and one click child themes tab to create the theme. Here is an additional resource for this: http://slocumthemes.com/docs/create-use-child-theme/
